HI, I’M MELAINE RODRIGUEZ HAYES
Andalusian roots.
A Texas kitchen.
I was born and raised in San Antonio. I’m 42, and I live in the Texas Hill Country with my husband Daniel, a carpenter, and our children Lucas, 15, and Sofia, 10.
My parents, Antonio and Pilar Rodriguez, moved from a small town near Córdoba in Andalusia to the United States in the 1980s. My father became a restaurant cook; my mother taught Spanish. At home, both languages were spoken, and the kitchen was the heart of family life.
My summer visits to abuela Carmen meant herb pots in the patio, a small vegetable garden and olive oil always close at hand. I watched, learned and filled a checkered notebook with family recipes.
“My abuela always said, lo que cultivas, te cuida.”
A return to simple things
After more than ten years working in logistics in Houston, I missed the kitchen of my childhood. At 35, after my abuela Carmen passed away, I returned to those everyday cooking traditions and began making more time for home-prepared food.
In 2022, I filmed my first recipe at the kitchen counter: ginger, turmeric and lemon tea. I like to keep things calm and practical — like a neighbor sharing a recipe over the garden fence.
Today, my kitchen is filled with teas, juices, shakes, broths and simple snacks. A ceramic kettle, handwritten herb labels, a bronze almirez and painted pottery from abuela’s home sit alongside familiar American kitchen staples.
Good ingredients. Clear steps. No miracle promises.
I respect family traditions while making room for individual needs. “Every body is different, so listen to yours.” Persistent symptoms deserve medical attention.
“Y’all, this is so simple, you’ll see.”
With love, Melaine
